Chtonic Rites

Chthonic Rites is an installation and ‘haunted smart desk’ where Siri and Alexa, who speak through an Apple iPhone and Amazon Echo, are in conversation with each other. As the conversation continues, the desk comes to life; ‘smart bulbs’ in desk lamps flicker on and off, and Google search results appear and disappear on the nearby desktop monitor.  The conversation between the assistants explores their relationships to gender, climate, philosophy, techno-politics and ancient mystery cults – and the hidden geopolitical forces nestled within their supposedly friendly identities.
